I would consider this the sheet linked directly to my final piece, if not part of it. Note: the photograph here was taken before it was finished, the final drawing has a line of black tape across the eyes.

This drawing is simply about a censored face, it isn't as cryptic as some of my pages or A2 sheets. I wanted to maintain simplicity in its concept so I could improve detail in my drawing skills. I have used a picture of my dad because it is original and I could get a detailed photograph. I think that in hindsight I should have added more to the picture as its direct message is vague. This was produced when I had the idea to draw or model something and stick real tape or obstructing material over it, I decided both was the right direction. I have only used pencil to maintain its simplicity and have more details. the detail of the face is good in my opinion and I feel I have drawn the depth and lighting on the face very well. It is better than my model final piece because that has little amount of greater detail, but not better because of what tape was used; the black line could have just been drawn on

FREEDOM subliminal messages

The cult movie, "THEY LIVE", was a heavy inspiration for this mood board and has been a good source to look at whilst exploring censorship and freedom of speech. The general concept of this drawing, and the film, is that advertising, TV, radio and magazines are just a front/cover, really being government messages that are brainwashing the general public. It is relevant to censorship because it is saying that the true intentions/meanings behind products, advertising and many other aspects of everyday life could be hidden or censored from us; borrowing aspects from theories of "big brother"and government scheming heavily. I recognize that it is quite extreme and cartoonish, but it is meant to be surreal and blunt in its message and context. I feel I have achieved this as the text is very bold and aggressive, and also intriguing at first glance. The media I have used (pencil HB 4B) help establish a simplistic yet detailed depiction of city streets and make the lettering stand out well. I think that it could do with more colour to help it from looking dull and some of the perspectives are off slightly. Also the lettering isn't as neat as it could have been, but overall it is a relevant piece of work leading up to my final piece.

FREEDOM photo ideas for final piece

I decided that my final piece would definitely be a metaphor for censorship. I decided to base the concept on an image by Frank Miller, one I have already researched and attempted myself, due to it being very effective and dark. I am not sure whether it will be drawn or sculpted yet so I have taken pictures of myself in the concept of what I am going to do to get a rough idea.

FREEDOM fmp sketches

here I have used small board of MDF painted with primer as practice for my final piece. Originally I was going to use this but have found out from attempting it in small that pencil is not good to use on it, of which was going to be the main media. I used oil pastel to see if other media worked; it worked better but still not ideal for a final piece and quite risky

FREEDOM america

The Native American Holocaust is, in my opinion, one of the biggest disgraces to human history of all time. I feel strongly about how it is almost completely ignored in American culture and mocked by Americans today when really it should be noticed as an important example of human behavior at its worst. The slaughter of 100 million people, the biggest genocide known to man, was brought on by white settlers when "their" new land was occupied by natives. They fought wars with them, had their food source (buffalo) almost brought to extinction, were given new diseases by settlers, forced into their society and raped of their pride and culture. And now the remaining native Americans are a diluted people, a true example of how freedom can be taken completely and never found again.

This picture is meant to show emotion and feeling from this. I have tried to make it not convoluted so it focuses on the chief's face. That being said I wish that I had taken more time on the flag as it looks rushed, or moved the face to the center. I drew it in pencil without colour to make it both moody and sad.It is related to censorship because it is rarely recognised in American culture today and sometimes even mocked, a form of subtle censoring

FREEDOM censorship

Being the first A2 sheet I produced and image I looked at, this is the basis for all my project. I wanted to look at censorship and freedom of speech from the start, but after I researched it and found this picture, it immediately had effect on me and made me realize that creating a metaphor for censorship was what I wanted to do. Here I have recreated the original image by Frank Miller the best I can, using ink and coloured ink like in the original. I feel I have achieved a number of similarities to the original drawing in the plasters and body of the woman. The hands however are distracting due to the strokes of the felt tip that I used. The background is also a different black to the ink used on the main figures. In hindsight then, I could have tested the media used before using it to determine whether it was adequate. 

Freedom exhibition

Here are some photos taken at the freedom / protest exhibition at the civic. I have taken the pieces I find most interesting to me and the ones I feel might inspire me in the freedom project. My favourite is the 5th one down due its likeness to 1940s propaganda.
